Yup. For the last three weeks I have been social media free.
I had a good friend {I love you Alicia} who would post things for me when I had something to say, and she would reply to comments for me in my stead. But other than that, for three whole weeks I haven’t scrolled, liked, sent a DM or even looked at someone else’s life.
I have been completely present in mine.
And that was the goal. Every January our church does three weeks of prayer and fasting and the idea is to give something up that is hard to live without. Last year I gave up wine and most of my favorite foods and it was one of the most transformational times of my life. I am still basking in the benefits of those three weeks. In fact, my diet has totally changed and I mostly eat pretty clean, so that’s why I had to think hard about what to give up this year.
I have never been able to fully delete the social media apps from my phone. Due to my job being closely tied to social media, I’ve been glued to Facebook and Instagram apps for nearly 14 years. I haven’t done the math to figure out how much time that has sucked out of my life, but it’s been a lot of hours. Assuming during many of my Evy’s Tree years I spent at least two hours a day, that would mean that over the last 14 years I’ve spent at least 10,220 hours scrolling social media.
That’s almost one year and two months of my time on social media!
So, it seemed like it had to go. So go it did. How do I feel? AMAZING. I love it. I don’t know what’s happening in anyone’s life and I almost am grateful for it…when I run into people around town, I can legitimately ask how they are and spend time openly hearing about them without filling it with social media noise I saw about them on some app. It’s beautiful, authentic, organic and lovely.
I know it’s not forever. Social media will likely always be a part of my life, but it’s been such a beautiful break. But most importantly, during this break…
I started a podcast!
It’s not published yet as we are still recording, processing and editing. My dear friends Korey and Alicia are helping me and they are amazing.
The goals for this podcast are:
To tell the glory revealed stories…stories of how people went through suffering and came out with glory on the other end. Good comes out of bad. How you can make it, even if you feel like you can barely put one foot in front of the other.
Bring awareness to women who are suffering and what we can do to help them. So many beautiful people out there are going through some really, really hard things and this little team we’ve assembled over here at Glory Revealed is hoping to do something about it. We’re researching ways we can give, support, educate and encourage anyone going through a hard times.
We’ll talk about other things too, of course. Friendship, marriage, raising kids, starting a business, being an entrepreneur. I want to talk about it all. Because there is so much to talk about. But mostly, my biggest goal is spread joy, love, peace, hope…. Guys, we can make it. We really can. I can tell you from going through hell and back, I am better for it. I am ok.
And you will be too….
I’d love to know your thoughts about podcasting. Would you take a second to tell us?
Stay tuned for more info on our first launch date!
As for this blog, Glory Revealed Musings, I will continue to share private thoughts and journals for all paid subscribers. While podcasting is amazing, since it is public, I will not be able to be as open as I can here on this newsletter.
As always, thank you for your love and support, I’m so glad you are here. If you feel these posts would help someone else going through something similar, please feel free to share them with your friends…
Let’s talk! If you would like to discuss anything I’m talking about, or you simply have a thought, feel free to pop it into the comments! I’ll be monitoring them and will respond when I can. Hugs friends, and as always, I’m praying for everyone who reads this. xo
Glory Revealed Musings is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
What a journey it's been! I use Facebook for my volunteer work but taking a nice long break does sound like a really smart idea.
Why I was reading your essay, I was reminded of time that I ran into people around town and they started telling me a story and I said yes, I saw it on your social media. Or I would tell a story and they would say yes, I saw your post. How nice that would be to remove that from the interactions!
Exciting Ames! I’m looking forward to your podcast. Always move forward, even if they are baby steps, rooting for you.
